Hi , I'm Tara; yogini, mother & lover of life.
beginnings
My journey with yoga started more than 25 years ago. I knew yoga was calling me before I even set foot on a yoga mat. Back then it was more difficult to find a yoga studio and my experiences with yoga began with scouring second hand book stores and devouring multiple books on yoga, eastern philosophy and meditation. From there I began to explore these practices on my own, but being young and without a teacher I lacked the structure and experiential knowledge of the practices. I think I inherently knew that what I was exploring was the path for me, but I didn't have the confidence to go out and find a teacher, or maybe I wasn't ready, as they say "when the student is ready the teacher will appear". Finally, I found a teacher and attended my first yoga class some 25 years ago and from that moment I knew I'd found my path.
qualifications
After practicing with my first teacher for several years, I undertook the Yoga Australia accredited Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teaching (850+hrs) in 2004/2005 and in 2010 and after having my children, I trained as a Children's Yoga teacher with Zenergy (Foundation and Advanced). With a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, I also regularly teach the CIV and Diploma of Yoga. and enjoy mentoring up-coming yoga teachers and anyone who has an interest in exploring Yoga and what that might mean for them.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to travel and practice under a variety of renowned teachers via workshops and retreats around the globe. I’ve taught at a number of different studios, corporations and also in schools and vocational education organisations where I’m passionate about sharing the gift of yoga.
what i teach
Yoga to me is more than just the physical shapes, although these shapes have been amazingly healing for my physical body and have cured the headaches that plagued me since I was a child. But more than just the physical, yoga for me is about connection. The vehicle is yoga, but what I really teach is just that - connection.
Yoga is about connecting with ourselves, about peeling back the layers of our armour and the ideas of how we should be, think and act. Connection to ourselves on deeper levels is what heals. We are more than just our physical bodies, we have multiple layers that make up our being. Honouring and respecting ourselves and connecting to these multiple layers works to heal not only us, but everybody and everything around us.
This connection not only helps us personally to live a life full of health and vitality, but it also effects all those we come into contact with. As a mother of two children, I appreciate the affects that the practice of yoga can have on the relationships in our lives. Not only on our close relationships but with the wider community as a whole. As we practice yoga, we become more aware of the giant web of inter-connectivity that exists between ourselves, others and the natural world. How we treat ourselves ultimately effects how we treat others and our precious earth.
Those who know me, know that I'm greatly inspired by nature. I believe it to be one of my greatest teachers. The way it flows, moving through cycles over days, months, years and beyond, through it's strength, vulnerability, resilience and fragility. It's therefore not a surprise that my classes draw a lot from my love of nature in addition to yogic physiology and philosophy. I'm also deeply inspired by many other ancient eastern and indigenous philosophies and you'll notice I draw on these during my classes as well.
what to expect
My yoga classes may differ to those that you've attended before. My style of yoga can be described as gentle flow and although it's definitely beneficial for the muscles, joints, tissues, organs and systems of the physical body, it's not a sweaty gym class, although it might make you sweat. I ask my students to show up without expectations, to come and simply hold space for themselves to be present. Whether this means moving a little or a lot is up to them. My classes are therefore for anybody, whether you're a beginner or an experienced yogi, young or old. Connection with breath in my classes is key, as is awareness. I try to create a safe and nurturing environment that honours unique bodies and stories. As you familiarise yourself with the way I practice and teach my hope is that you'll eventually discover a moving meditation and a chance to connect deeply with yourself.
In this busy world that we live in, I believe that this connection is what we need more than ever. Slowing down, showing up, without judgement for whatever unfolds. Dropping resistance and allowing ourselves to be held by the ebb and flow of our breath; it's movement and the luxurious glimpses of stillness beyond the movement.
Imagine an entire hour to sink into the subtleties of your being, to connect and to experience the peaceful part of yourself that sits in the background, supporting and holding you.
As the winds of change blow through your life, let yourself connect and be present. Come journey with me "a journey of the self, through the self, to the self".
